The idea for ‘Rabarbra’ is quite simple – a vase made from a cylinder and a disc. The initial sketch was extremely rudimentary. Our approach was to work directly in full scale using colored plastic foil to make simple models.

All though we tried lots of iterations on this specific theme, we finally returned to the size, proportions and even color of the very first mock-up; resisting the urge to slim the diameter of the cylinder and maintaining the tension between the two elements. We find that the disc and the cylinder are balancing each other and have equal power in the final object.

We don’t have a lot of experience working in glass. Glass has very specific properties of transparency, optics and color and also how the intensity of color changes with the thickness of the material. From a designer’s point of view the big challenge is how to understand the presence of the final object with no access to the actual material itself.
